Chayla

Who am I? In the last few years I have asked this question more times than I can eat peanut butter in a single sitting (& if you know me personally you know that is a heck of a lot). With that being said, I simply do not know. Actually to be a honest I am exhausted with trying to figure it out; but I guess that is the beauty of being a young adult in this great big world.

Sure there may be some confusion but I should have you know that there are some pretty solid traits that certainly make me the person I am:

  1. My insane laugh. Just about everything can make me giggle in some way or another. Be warned! Once I start I usually do not stop.
  2. I am 26 years young and loving every second of it!
  3. I have social anxiety. Others would beg to differ but I ensure you what many see is absolutely deceiving!
  4. My sick need (not desire) to travel. This world is a lot bigger than what we could ever imagine! I say, why not discover it?
  5. I am a Geographer. No for real, I really am. I got my Undergraduate Degree in Geographic Analysis. My program specifically included a lot of computer mumbo jumbo (all related to GIS and Map Generating) but my personal interests were/are in physical geography and environmental sciences.
  6. I have a big desire to try and make sure everyone is happy. Nothing hurts me more than seeing others hurt! Gotta make you people smile.
  7. I love photography and would love to become more serious about it one day.
  8. I am a Peanut Butter Connoisseur. Yeah, you heard right. Aside from travel, that creamy bad boy stole my heart ages ago. A jar a day keeps the heart at bay!
  9. My love for writing. But let me make myself clear; I prefer to write informally… Because let’s be honest, playing by the rules is fun… Said noone, EVER.
  10. Last but not least, I love coffee. But I mean c’mon who doesn’t?!

Join me on my journey to self discovery, travel and how to always stay young at heart.

Hey! I have been reading your blog and it’s awesome and very informative. I am beginning my TESOL training in December in Chiang Mai, Thailand as well! I am 23, female and traveling there alone, and since you have experience and also about the same age and female as me I was wondering if you traveled there alone, and if you have any tips or advice! Thanks and look forward to hearing back!

Hey Bekka! That’s awesome! You’re about to experience the most amazing yet challenging time of your life. Thailand is one of the most incredible places I have ever been too. With that said I had a tough time with culture shock my first month living here. I had never traveled to Asia before so everything was and is still so new to me. I am 24 years old and came here alone this past July through a program called “Greenheart Travel.” Through Greenheart I completed a one month TESOL course in Hua Hin, Thailand. I think that Thailand has taught me so many things about myself that I would have never discovered back home in Canada and I will love Thailand everyday because of that. The best tips that I can give to you is to be as open minded as you possibly can. I am not sure where you are from but Thailand is extremely different from North America. There have been countless occasions where I have been put into very confusing situations where I cannot understand why Thai people do things the way they do. Thai people are very relaxed and don’t stress out about life they way I am used too in everyday life in Canada. Situations like that may frustrate you, so if you are not a patient person you may want to practice patience lol! Unless you are a very daring person and are not picky food wise you will feel that your options for food are very limited. This country loves and I mean LOVE rice, noodles, egg and fish. If non of the above are your kind of thing you may have a hard time with food here. Things like peanut butter, cheese, and nice big healthy salads are possible to get but are hard to find depending where you live or are very expensive. Also, Thai people don’t do typical breakfast north American style. Even for breakfast they will eat rice lol. Thai people are amazingly sweet and will always make you feel welcome as long as you
are smiley and kind to them. The weather is insanely hot. There isn’t a day where I do not sweat. The majority of schools do not have air conditioning so that is something to be aware of. I haven’t made my way to Chiang Mai yet but I plan too soon. 🙂 If you have any specific questions feel free to ask as many as you’d like.
